Three Things to Keep in Mind Going Into the New Year

A Myth-vs-Mechanism Perspective

The new year always brings a flood of promises:

✨ This supplement will fix everything.

✨ This 30-day cleanse will reset your body.

✨ This diet helps you lose weight fast.

As a functional nutritionist, I want to slow the conversation down — just a bit — and bring it back to mechanism, not marketing.

Here are three important things to keep in mind as you step into the new year, especially if your goals include better energy, weight loss, hormone balance, or long-term metabolic health.

1. Supplements Only Work If They’re Correcting

Myth:

“If a supplement works for weight loss / hair growth / hormones, it should work for everyone.”

Mechanism:

Supplements are tools, not magic. They work only when their action matches a real imbalance in your body.

Take berberine as an example. It’s often marketed as a “weight loss supplement,” but that’s an oversimplification.

Berberine can be helpful if:

  • You have insulin resistance
  • You struggle with blood sugar regulation
  • Appetite dysregulation is driven by glucose or insulin signaling
  • There’s a specific gut dysbiosis it helps modulate

But if insulin resistance isn’t your issue?

Berberine may do very little — or even feel unpleasant.

The same logic applies to hair loss supplements:

  • If hair loss is driven by DHT, a DHT-targeting supplement may help
  • But if the real issue is poor nutrient absorption, gut inflammation, low iron, thyroid dysfunction, or chronic stress — that supplement misses the mark entirely

This is why “hair growth,” “weight loss,” and “hormone balance” claims are so misleading.

They’re describing outcomes, not causes.

👉 The most effective supplement plan is one that:

  • Targets a specific mechanism
  • Is chosen based on testing
  • Uses high-quality sourcing and proper dosing

There is no universally “good” supplement — only appropriate ones.

2. Quick Fixes, Cleanses, and Fad Weight Loss Aren’t Sustainable (or Necessary)

Myth:

“A 30-day cleanse or juice fast will reset my body and change my health.”

Mechanism:

Your body doesn’t need punishment — it needs support.

Most quick weight-loss programs:

  • Strip calories without correcting metabolism
  • Reduce inflammation temporarily
  • Cause water weight loss that rebounds quickly
  • Ignore muscle preservation
  • Stress hormones and slow metabolic rate over time

Yes, you might feel better for a moment.

But if nothing underneath has changed — liver function, insulin signaling, thyroid output, gut health, nutrient status — the results don’t last.

And worse?

Repeated cycles of restriction can teach the body to conserve, making future fat loss harder.

That said — rapid fat loss is possible when it’s done intelligently.

3. Nutrition Works Best When It’s Personalized — Not Trend-Based

  • Lower carbohydrates

Others do better with:

  • More carbohydrates
  • Strategic fat intake
  • Protein distributed differently throughout the day

The difference isn’t willpower — it’s biochemistry.

To truly dial in nutrition, we want to understand:

  • Blood sugar patterns
  • Insulin sensitivity
  • Thyroid signaling
  • Stress physiology
  • Mineral and electrolyte status
  • Digestive capacity

From there, we can build a nutrition framework that supports:

  • Stable energy
  • Lean mass preservation
  • Hormone balance
  • Metabolic flexibility
  • Sustainable fat loss

For most families, this still comes back to solid fundamentals:

  • Adequate protein at every meal
  • Healthy fats that support hormones and satiety
  • Whole-food carbohydrates chosen intentionally

There is no “perfect” macro split — only what your body responds to best.
